It's been over a year since I've last posted on the blog, but here I am, once again. I guess I can never really close this down for good. It contains remnants of some of my most precious memories abroad and a time in my life I hold near and dear to my heart.

Since my last post in April of last year, I:

- took a work trip to Italy, which allowed me to meet with family I haven't seen in years
- ran my first half marathon in Lake Placid, NY
- started my final year of grad school
- flew down to New Orleans for a quick food-gorging getaway
- attended an International Ed conference down in Alexandria, VA
- visited Germany over Christmas into New Years to see family
- ended my work in student exchange to focus on my M.Ed. full time
- started and ended my practicum in Passaic Public Schools
- took a long awaited trip to Zion, Bryce, and Grand Canyon national parks out west
- completed and passed my state certification exams
- became an auntie again
- entered into my final year in my 20's... hit 29 and am already half way through!
- started spiralizing Zoodles and Swoodles in an attempt to eat healthier
- Konmari-ed my entire apartment to keep only the things that spark joy
- started reading real, physical books again (not including text books for grad school ;))
- set up a real-life Roth IRA account (phew, talk about finally entering adulthood)

It's funny how day to day, it always seems like time is flying, but when I think back on what has happened and who I was since my last post, I see and feel change much more deeply. The short list barely touches the emotions tied to the last 365 days, feelings of joy and excitement, accomplishment, fear, worry... I find myself worried if I am making the right choices for the years ahead in terms of career path, in my relationships, in my physical, mental and financial health.

Am I doing things right? Am I doing or not doing things I might regret in a few years time?

It's really hard to know.

I'd like to enter these next few months with low expectations (wait, hear me out) and just be grateful for the unknown. It's freaking hard, and scary. My first instinct is to plan and try to control life (at least fool myself into thinking I can control life) as much as possible... but when you stop and think about it, the unknown leaves space for change and for new developments. The fact that I will be traveling again to a country I've never been before, ending my formal education (once and for all) and looking for a job again in the next few months leaves a lot of things out of my control, and I don't know how things will look by the time my 30th birthday rolls around in December... but maybe that's a good thing, because it leaves the door open for opportunities.

So, here's to the unknown days of 2016, and whatever they may bring.

I was excited to be in a proper bed (after sleeping on a mattress in a tiny frozen loft for a year). I was excited about real coffee in my cup in the mornings. I was excited about all the cheese I could consume without restriction. I was happy (and still am) about being able to spend time with my family every week and be a part of their day to day lives.

But like all things in life, the excitement starts to wear off and the new becomes not so new and soon you are grumbling over having to go grocery shopping and paying for lame-o parking tickets.

So my mind rebels and starts to wander from here to Arizona, to California, to Spain, to Portugal, to Morrocco, to Bulgaria, to Turkey, to Greece, to Iran, to Chile... my mind could see myself in all those places and more. And those thoughts make me start researching those countries, and then I have to admit to myself that I want to go abroad again.

Luckily or unluckily, my partner is not one to be persuaded to this suitcase lifestyle, so while it can be frustrating, he does tend to keep me grounded. He is the kind of person that could happily never leave the house if he didn't need to. I sometimes compare us to a zen garden, where he is that peaceful, heavy stone right in the middle and I'm the sand being pushed all around.

Anyways, for now, I'm not going anywhere. But it feels good to think about it. And to say it "out loud" here on this outdated blog. If anything changes, I'll be sure to let you know, blogger.

Until then, good night.Herspectivehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01460304532107556889noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5468430026644807742.post-47666470349296640322015-02-16T07:48:00.000-08:002017-06-08T12:13:27.762-07:00Frozen TidesColdest day of the year so far, with the windshield in the negatives. Woke up extra early to drive down to the NJ shore to catch the sunrise, for whatever little bit of adventure we could get in before the weekend was over. Despite risking frost bite (!), we enjoyed every brisk, blustery minute.

It's me! I mean, you, only it's you from the future. At this exact moment, you are traveling along the coast of France with a bunch of idealistic young adults. You wake up early and set your goals. You challenge yourselves, sometimes in frighteningly dangerous and unnecessary ways, and while you all mean well, loosen up a bit. Enjoy where you are but don't stress so much. Allow yourself to be 18, traveling Europe and experiencing the world for the first time as a young adult. Go ahead.

A Sunday excursion at Mont San Michel with two of my travel mates, Patricia and Miyuki in February 2005.

You might be kind of bummed right now, since it's freezing, you don't
speak French, and you are on the coast fund raising in bitter winds. But you know, that time in France will end. Your year traveling around Europe will end, you will come back to America, but you will never be the same. Still to this day, you will find yourself wanting to travel, to learn, to experience the world first hand, so don't feel bad about not wanting to come back and go to college. You will, but you will never completely shake off that urge. You will fight with yourself for the entirety of the next decade, over your desire for adventure vs. the expectations from society to "build up a career" and "a strong financial base" (aka make money) and be a sensible adult.

Good news and bad news; you will do a little bit of both, but neither completely well.

But for now, just enjoy it. And while you're at it, be a little gentler with yourself. You are experiencing each day for the first time just like everybody else.

Wishing you grand adventures from the future,

x diana
Life has been so busy since moving back to the United States, that I find I rarely stop and reflect on things the way I used to. I feel myself craving moments of silence to just be lost somewhere, out in nature or even just in a foreign environment, a new street, perhaps, to heighten my senses to the world around me.

Two weeks ago, I started a new job, working in the field of international education. A job that puts me in front of a screen for even more hours per day and keeps my mind busier with thoughts than before. It's what I wanted, the position I mean, but it has been a bitter-sweet start. I left the field of teaching, which I have been doing for over five years, and which I loved so very much--especially working with my adult students.

When I moved back to the US from Korea, I wanted to find work in the study abroad field, which seemed like a good fit based on my experiences and interests. But as much as I looked and applied, all I got was an offer for an unpaid internship in Boston, so when this company offered me a position, literally fifteen minutes from my house, it was hard to turn it down.

It's way too premature to come to any conclusions about the new job, but it is a change, and if life has taught me nothing else, it's that change is necessary and good.

In other news, this month is TWO YEARS THAT I'VE BEEN BACK IN THE UNITED STATES!

Since being back:

- I've moved--twice--and am now somewhat "settled" in an apartment that I swore I wouldn't move out of for at least two years more... Let's see if I can keep that promise to myself ;).

- I started my MA in Education, which has been a long-time goal and desire of mine, and feel super fortunate to have been selected to be part of TCNJ's program, which subsidizes the insane cost of grad school in the US (another post for another day).

- I have started running... and running... and running... and am working my way up to my first half marathon this year. Even though I ran track in high school, I actually hated the running experience up until very recently. It started with an obstacle 5k race that I did with some friends (that I couldn't even run the whole way through), yet enjoyed the energy and experience so much, that I decided to do another 5k, and then I did another and another and then a 10k and even started off 2015 with a 4 mile run through Central Park at midnight in the freezing cold. My PR is 10 miles, but it has been hard to train during this typically unbearable Northeast winter. Trying my best to keep it up.

- Took a German course as a refresher, but realized that trying to keep up German in the US is kind of pointless as it is really not useful here, at least it hasn't been in the ESL classroom in the US ;) and so finally (now that I'm not working evenings anymore teaching), I signed up for a Spanish class--which starts this month! Excited to be studying a new language!

- Visited Texas twice, North Dakota once, took a road trip to Montreal, a couple more road trips along the east coast, and one very short trans-Atlantic trip to Germany over Thanksgiving week in 2013 to visit family (which was way too short of a time for such a big expense and undertaking).

I guess that somewhat sums it up, at least on a superficial level.

Originally, I planned on starting a totally new blog, on a new website, but somehow found my way back here. So, no promises, but let's see if I can get myself back into writing a bit more in 2015.

I left Korea on February 28, 2013 and have been back in
the US
for just over two months now. During that time, I spent about a month
applying for jobs and interviewing. I had an interview with New York City
Teaching Fellows, but didn't get in. I interviewed with a few other
places and by early April, I had two job offers. I accepted a position as a
Community Education Coordinator for a larger-sized non-profit near New York City which is
where I am now. So far, so good. I enjoy my colleagues, my students and
my new life as a young professional here in the US. As many people keep
reminding me, I am quite fortunate to have found work so quickly.

After almost four
years, I finally own a car again! That was something I didn't expect to
happen quite so fast, but since I needed one for the job, we quickly scrambled
together and bought one around mid-April. Also, as of last Tuesday, I
became an auntie (again) when my sister and her husband had their first
child. It's been a great week being together with family and celebrating
new life.

I still think about Seoul and I do have moments where I think back on
wonderful memories of life in Germany
and Korea
but right now, I am happy to be where I am. Right around the time I
left Korea, I was cleaning
out my desk at work and found this journal entry which I had written one year
earlier from the time I left Germany. It read:

February 22, 2012

New starts are so
difficult, especially when everything feels foreign and unknown. Like Korea.

Reading that statement at the end of my time in Korea really felt like coming full
circle. It’s amazing to see how with
time, everything works itself out, even in the most unknown and uncertain
phases of our lives. Once Korea was unknown, now it is a treasured memory and life experience.

It's been fun
sharing my adventures throughout the last couple of years, but since being back
I haven't kept up my blog so this may very well be my last blog entry here. Thanks for sharing the journey with me. I
wish you all wonderful adventures of your own.

With all the threats of war and fear-inducing news coming off the Korean Peninsula, I thought a little lightheartedness was due. Obviously war is never a laughing matter, but as the saying goes, sometimes you've got to laugh or you'll cry.

Of course, being home feels a bit like being on vacation at the moment as mom is feeding us well and we're enjoying the ease of life in the US while not having too many responsibilities. Oh the joys of being able to understand and communicate easily with everyone around us again. ;).

I've been contemplating whether to keep up this blog anymore now that I'm no longer that "american girl in germany who moved to korea". I don't know who actually reads this thing, but even if it is only my mom (hi mommy!) it has been fun keeping it up throughout my time abroad.

I've been back for a total of 3.5 days now. Jet lag hasn't been as bad as I expected. Sunday I had an interview for the New York City Teaching Fellows in the city and it went pretty well. I'll have to wait about a month to hear if I get into the program. Otherwise, enjoying the sunshine and the freedom I have in between jobs.
In less than four years, I'll have moved four times, three of which were international moves.

June 2009 - USA to Germany (Lauf)

October 2010 - Lauf to Nuernberg

February 2012 - Germany to South Korea (Seoul)

Feburary 2013 - South Korea to USA

Luckily, I haven't accumulated too much stuff and I've never had to ship boxes or furniture. I could always bring everything I need with me on the plane within one or two suitcases.

Yesterday night, as David and I were doing a testrun packing, to see if we could fit everything in our bags, I was on autopilot sorting, saving and throwing things away. Moving is a great way to purge and keep clutter from accumulating. It's also a great deterrent from spending money on unnecessary things. I didn't buy much this year knowing another overseas move was on the horizon. I'm not saying I want to be a suitcase vagabond forever, but the last few years I've learned to live simply with my suitcase or two full of things.

I am looking forward to settling down for a bit though. I'll be happy to be in a place that I can start to invest in and to have a home that feels homey and not just temporary. I'll be living with my parents for a few months until DH & I can get jobs sorted, but after that, hopefully we can take a break with the boxes and masking tape.

There are many emotions that human beings experience: happiness, sadness, excitement, anxiousness, fear, anger, pride, jealousy, laziness, sympathy--the list goes on. Buddhism teaches there are 108 emotions. I don't know what they are, but that number is a lot higher than the list I wrote above.

Lately, when I am sitting in my cold apartment, I find myself feeling excited about going back to the US. Then when I'm at school and see the kids that I spent the past year with, I feel sad, even guilty that I am leaving after only one year. I'm having bi-polar days and truth be told, it is a bit exhausting.

Here are the ones I've read that I think could be useful to anyone looking to do the same.

1. Korea's Place in the Sun: A Modern History
by: Bruce Cumings

This was the first book I bought/read after looking for books about Korea on Amazon. It's long and academic and probably not the best choice for those looking for an introduction to Korea, however could be a good read for people who really love history. Pick up this book only after having some knowledge about Korea and/or having read some of the books below.

2. The Koreans

by: Michael Breen

This was one of the last books I've read about Korea, although I wish it were one of the first! Perhaps I'm a bit biased since I met the author and heard him speak in person, but I highly recommend this book for first-timers. The style of writing is easy to read and he approaches the culture from many different points of view presenting the positive and not so positive aspects of the culture. Definitely a book to have in your Korea collection.

3. Korea Unmasked

by: Won-Bok Rhie

This book, or more accurately, this graphic novel, was recommended to me by my colleague. Presented in comic book format, it is broken down into different sections including Korean History, Education, People, Differences between Japan/China, etc. At first I enjoyed the lightheartedness of the book, but after awhile, the Korea-centric point of view started to get a bit irritating. Patriotism is okay, but nationalism can be a bit annoying especially when you're hoping to read something without a slanted view. Still worth a look, but don't let this be your one and only view of Korean culture.

4. Nothing to Envy

by: Barbara Demick

I mentioned this book once before on my blog, but it's worth a second (and third) mentioning. It brings to life in a very real way the issues of North Koreans and their lives as defectors in the south. One of my favorite books I've read this year, beautifully written and easy to read, I'd probably put this as number two on the list after reading "The Koreans", only because I think the other book is a stronger introduction to life in the ROK, however I'd recommend this book to anyone and everyone, even those not interested in life in South Korea.

5. Tears of Blood

by: Young-Bok Yoo

I was lucky enough to hear this author speak in person as well, a former POW of North Korea, this amazing man tells his story about life during the Korean War and the rippling affects it had and continues to have on thousands of families on the Korean peninsula. Probably not the first book you should pick up, but if after reading "Nothing to Envy", you'd like to get another point of view, this would be my next recommendation.

6. Please Look After Mom
by: Kyung-Sook Shin

My most recent read, "Please Look After Mom", is a fictional story about a Korean family in modern day Korea. It presents cultural issues such as the generation gap between those who grew up in the war and the younger Koreans growing up today. It addresses family roles and traditions in Korea as well as a more universal experience of the relationship between a child and their mother. It's a bit heart wrenching, but has received overall very good reviews.

* * * * *

If I had to recommend an order for learning about Korea, I'd say start with number 2, 4, 5, 6, 3 and if you really, really want to know all the nitty-gritty details, read number 1.

Anyone read any other books about Korea you'd like to share? Or have you read any of the books on the list and disagree? I'm always open to suggestions^^!

Japan has a reputation for being an expensive destination, but to be honest, I didn't find it to be any worse than New York City or even some European destinations. It is certainly more expensive than Korea but it's not unmanageable. I'm not going to make this too detailed or too long, but below are some tips for people looking to keep their wallets a little fuller when heading over to Japan from Korea. Some tips might apply for visitors from other lands as well. Keep in mind this is based on our experience and not all the points may apply to you.

- We booked two tickets on Peach Airlines and it was a steal compared to flights on other airlines heading to Osaka. The only catch is as it's a budget airlines, plan to pay extra for just about everything else: any checked-in luggage, for food aboard the plane and even to pay with CC on their website. However, I found that still the ticket price was significantly cheaper. Travelers are allowed one carry-on each with an allowance of 10 kgs/115 cm size, which in our case, was more than enough. It is a Japanese airline, which from Seoul only flies to Osaka, but once in Japan, you can use it to get to other destinations domestically and abroad if you choose.

- Do your research before hand. This probably sounds like a no-brainer, but I know that there are different kinds of travellers, some that like to plan everything out to a T, and others who like to show up and figure things out as they go. A good middle ground is probably the best place to be. Especially in regards to transportation, you need to know what deals are offered in order to ask for it. For example, if you ask for a ticket from Osaka airport to Kyoto, they will give you just that, at the full fare of almost ¥3,000 (or around $33). If you ask for JR West Rail Pass for foreigners, you will take the exact same train as that above, and pay only ¥ 2,000 (around $22), or you can get the ICOCA + Haruka Limited Express deal and pay ¥ 3,000 and get a ticket for the same train as those deals above and in addition get a T-Money type train pass (ICOCA card) with ¥1,500 credit on the card plus an additional ¥500 deposit on the card which you get back. This is an awesome deal! So you're basically only paying ¥1,000 for the same ticket that you would have paid ¥3,000 for, and in addition get ¥1,500 additional transportation money.

I'm not going to lie, transportation in Japan is confusing because there are several companies and lines that offer various deals and tickets. You need to know ahead of time what is the best deal for you. There are lots of passes, including a JR national pass or regional passes like the Kansai-Thru Pass but all have rules and various exceptions to their usage. In addition to long distance travel, there are city passes for bus, or bus and subway that you can use to save you on transportation fare. Again, do your research before hand. As we travelled mainly in Kyoto and in Osaka, we didn't need much more than the Icoca credit + Haruka Ltd. Express and 2 one day bus passes (at ¥500) to get around to all our destinations. That's a total for ¥3,500 for transporation for four days. That's less than $10 per person per day.

- I can't give you tips on hotels in Kyoto or traditional guest houses, but as for hostels, we stayed at an exceptional one called Khaosan Kyoto Guesthouse, voted number 3 hostel in all of Asia! It was a great deal and we had a private twin room for about $45 per night. There are other hostels that I've heard good things about, but this is the only place we stayed and we were perfectly happy with its location, cleanliness and facilities.

-And as for food? Well, we didn't really cut back on expenses in this area because let's face it, trying new foods is by far one of the biggest pleasures of travelling. But in case you need to save a little bit on this area, perhaps you don't want to eat all your meals at restaurants, you can certainly fill your stomachs eating streetfood, eat lots of samples at the markets or in the dept. store (the Kyoto JR Train Station has some exceptionally good (and large!) samples or go to your nearest convenience stores and pick out some cheap rice balls or bento/lunch boxes.

...And we're back! From a totally fantastic trip over the East Sea to the Land of the Rising Sun. Japan was awesome. Since we were only there for about 3.5 days, it's hard to say we've experienced the country fully, rather it was a sampling of the culture, the food, the people--and it left me definitely wanting more. I really want to go back to Japan someday, but next time for a longer stay. We flew into KIX (Kansai International Airport) and divided our time between Kyoto, considered to be the cultural capital of Japan, and Osaka, the hyper-active younger brother of Tokyo. I'll write some tips and logistical information in the next post, but for now, photos!

I've been having lots of fun with my kids these last two weeks during our school's winter camp. According to our contract with SMOE, NSETs have to conduct five weeks of camps spread throughout the winter and summer vacations. Camps mean smaller classes, more flexible teaching materials and lots of games. During camp time, I actually feel like I get to know the kids on a more personal level while leaving boring school textbooks on the shelves. I think these past two weeks were some of the best days I've had at Samjeong this whole year to date.

Despite all the new starts I've had in the last few years, I'm nervous to do it again.

What if I can't find a job? What if I don't fit in anymore? What if I miss my life abroad? What if I regret not having stayed in Korea? What if I can't settle? What if I end up 'failing'?

These thoughts whirl around in my head. I know in the logical part of my mind that there was always uncertainty at every start that I've undertaken. One year ago today, I had no clue about where in Seoul I would be teaching, who I would be teaching, who I'd be working with or even where I would be living. Go back another three years from then and I was just starting my last semester of undergrad and I had zero clue about what would happen once I moved to Germany. But in the end, everything always worked out, in fact, better than anything I could have planned.

Soon I will be going to a place I've lived the majority of my life. There are less unknowns this time around, and yet it doesn't seem to help.

If any of you are HIMYM fans, you might remember the episode where Marshall wants to quit his job, but just when he's about to do it, he feels this wave of nostalgia at every turn making him think 'this job isn't too bad', even though he hated his work at Goliath National Bank. Part of that preference to stick with the old, is because it's familiar and letting go means choosing an unknown over certainty. I think I'm entering that period now in Korea.

Wishing myself courage and luck to do it all over one more time.
This month, I will be traveling to Japan!

DV is half Japanese but he's only been to Japan once and I've never been, so it's something we really wanted to try to make happen while we were in Korea this year. Japan has a reputation for being a pricey country to tour, and it certainly can be, but we were lucky to find some super low-budget tickets with Peach Airlines. We'll be in Japan only for a few days, so we're limiting our travel to Kyoto and Osaka. Naturally, more updates to follow.^^ Yah! We're super excited!

The view from inside my apartment--snow and ice and frozen socks and towels that we placed there to try to absorb the perspiration from the windows. It's been a cold winter.

One thing I won't miss about Korea is the freezing cold winters. We're talking negative temperatures here on a consistent basis. Today's high? -7. (And I'd also like to point out that tonight will be -16.) Even though New Jersey and Germany both have their fair share of cold weather, I can't seem to get the chill out of my bones here. Seoul is cold, make no mistake about it and to make matters worse, our Officetel has terrible heating. We have ice all along the INSIDE of our windows. We've asked management to look at it... six times. They said it's
normal, yes, even the ice. So what to do to survive this unbearable
cold? The following are my stay-alive-in-the-cold tips for living in
Seoul.

1) Electric Blankets
Seriously, a god send. I bought mine for around 40,000 KRW ($40) at my
local Lotte Mart. Without it, I would have frozen long ago. Get one.
There's no excuse.
2) Fuzzy-wuzzy was a bear...

Anything fuzzy and synthetic, and doesn't breath (like cotton) is
likely to keep your extremities warmer. Fuzzy socks, hand warmers, leg
warmers, pajama pants, the list goes on and on, you can find these items
just about everywhere in Seoul, from Daiso and on the street for less
costly items or in standard stores if you don't mind paying the extra
premium for them.

Korean women are always fashionable, even in the bitter cold. I noticed lots of women walking around in fuzzy robe-like polar bear fuzz this winter, like the first two women are sporting.

3) Break a sweat...
by eating one of Korea's many super spicy soups.

Pretty sure he's not eating Korean food, but he looks as if he is.

4) Make it a steamy night

When I just can't shake the cold, I take a super hot shower and as a
result my skin kind of burns for a while afterwards. It brings my body
temperature up just long enough for me to get cozy upstairs in my loft
under my electric blanket before bed.

5) Jim-jil-bang It

Don't want to rack up the water bill? Go hang out for a day at a Korean
sauna, otherwise known as the Jim-jil-bang. With a one time entrance
fee, you can stay warm and relax the whole day long and enjoy a hot meal
while you're there too. Just a warning for the modest among you, you
will be expected to strip and go naked in the gender separated hot tub
areas. Koreans have no qualms about this and you shouldn't either.
It's actually a pretty liberating feeling.

6) Let's go to the mall... today.

Since our heating doesn't work, and we're only two stops from Gimpo
Airport, we spend a lot of time wandering around the Lotte Mall there
warming up on someone else's dime. Seoul has TONS of indoor malls
scattered all around the city, there's bound to be one near you. Enjoy
feeling toasty for a little while.

So 2012 is about 24 hours away from being completed. Presently, all seems calm as I sit in my tiny little Seoul apartment, but looking back, this year has certainly kept me on my toes. In the last 364 days...

-Visited the US after 1.5 years

-Packed up and said good-bye to family, friends and students in NUE

-Moved to Seoul, South Korea, became an expert at using chopsticks & started teaching some of the cutest and greatest kids in Korea right here in Banghwa with EPIK

-My first niece was born with news of two nephews on the way in 2013

-Took Korean classes

-Applied for and successfully completed the Visa/Green Card Interview & process at the US Embassy

-Experienced the beauty and extreme weather that comes with each of Korea's four seasons

-Explored green tea fields, walked through bamboo forests, looked straight across the 38th parallel into North Korea, experienced my first Typhoon season, visited the Yeosu World Expo, celebrated Buddha's birthday, lived the life of a monk for 24 hours, climbed mountains all over Korea, ate too many new and delicious foods to even start to name, visited the beautiful island of Jeju as well as making Seoul feel like home.

-and lastly but not least, celebrated seven years with David :)

Phew. Thank you 2012! Wishing you all a wonderful, healthy and fulfilling New Year in 2013.
Jeju is feeling more like a dream with each passing day, now that we're back here in freezing Seoul -.-. Before all the details completely elude me, I wanted to post a few things we experienced there for future Jeju visitors.

One of the questions I had before visiting was whether Jeju would be worth a winter visit. While it is a good deal further south, it isn't a tropical island. Jackets were necessary (no beach lounging this time of year) but we were pleasantly surprised that the weather was so agreeable. We had sunshine Monday and Wednesday while we were roaming around the other parts of the island, and Tuesday, at Hallasan, it was covered in snow, which was a pretty nice setting for our Christmas Day hike. And a plus, there were no crowds anywhere (which is a pretty huge plus when you're talking about visiting anywhere in Korea).

We stayed two nights in Jeju-si and it worked out for us well. We used buses to get around for long distance and taxis to get us in between to locations that were out of the way or a hassle to get to with public transport.

We were really pleased with our hotel/parktel, the Goodstay Nulsong Parktel. It was superbly clean and the staff super nice. We arrived around 9am and they allowed us to check in already, which was great so we didn't have to lug around our bags. The two nights there cost us $100, so $50 bucks a night, not bad. It's just off the main street with an E-mart/Lotte Mart/McD's nearby for budget eating, for those who don't want to eat all your meals out at restaurants.

First day, we hit up the East side of the island visiting Seongsan Ilchulbong (Sunrise Peak) and Seopjikoji. We used public transportation to get there. It cost 3,000 KRW o/w--but the ride is a bit long (about 1.5 hours). We didn't mind it too much though, as it was nice to look out the window and also to catch up on some sleep^^. I want to recommend printing out this blog post on The Lost Wanderer. The writer took great care in explaining public transport on the island and we found it really helpful. We didn't have enough time for Udo Island and we skipped the caves because 1) it's winter and we didn't want to go down into colder temperatures and 2) we've both seen caves before. Day 1 was my favorite day to be honest. I loved the blue skies, the sunshine and the vast and beautiful sea crashing against the coastline. The Sunrise Peak was beautiful and it was really interesting to watch the women divers.

Day 2 was meant to be our hike up Hallasan. It was easy to get to from Jeju-si, only about a 35 minute ride, but we got there around 9:30am, which didn't give us enough time to get to the peak. We only made it about half way up, which was a bit disappointing. They close access to the peak from 12:00 in the Winter to give hikers enough time to get back before dark. However, we did manage to reach one of the two craters on the mountain. The thing is, the weather was so snowy, that you couldn't see anything, which makes me think, even if we got to the top, the view would have been similar. The wintery scenery was beautiful though.

What we saw. If it wasn't for the sign, I would have had no clue what we were looking at.

So, we didn't make it to the top, but Christmas Day was still enjoyable. We had a nice meal and hit up a cafe and played some card games and ended the night with a movie on our huge TV in the hotel room.

Day 3, our last day, we checked out of the hotel and took a taxi to the airport. We dropped off our stuff at the luggage holding area (it cost us 7,000 KRW for 12 hours) and then we took the airport shuttle 600 to the south side of the island to Seogwipo. It was a super comfy, convenient ride. It cost 3,000 KRW to take us to the Convention Center, which is where we could see the Jungsangjeolli Cliffs. The south side of the island definitely has a more tropical feel to it, with clementine trees everywhere and warmer temperatures than Jeju-si, but to be honest, the three waterfalls that they advertise in the area are overrated. I've seen much better ones in other places. I'd skip them my second time around and just enjoy time walking along the coastline.

We took the airport shuttle back to Jeju-si, had some lunch and still had time to check out the much talked about Loveland, the erotic theme park. For those who are curious what it is, here's a more detailed post by another blogger. Personally, we found it disappointing. For 9,000 KRW per person, it wasn't worth the money or time. What I found more curious than the exhibits themselves, were the other people visiting. I expected to see young people and/or couples, but there were whole families visiting with grandma and grandpa in tow, not to mention a group of six older Ajusshis in their 60s hanging out there together.

After that we took a taxi back to the city and had a cup of coffee in a cafe before heading to the airport.

There are loads of touristy things to do on Jeju, we chose to focus more on nature and taking it easy. We had a great time and would love to go back again and hike some more of their Olle Trails and experience Jeju in the spring or summer. You can find cheap tickets on budget airlines such as Air Busan, Jeju Airlines & East Star Jet, especially if you book in advance and during the week, so your trip doesn't have to be costly if you don't want it to be. Actually, we budgeted for a lot more than we actually spent. For the two of us, we spent around 250,000 KRW for food, transport, entrance fees and whatever else we bought for the three days, add to that our 100,000 KRW for our hotel, and around 150,000 for our tickets and we had a three day vacation on Jeju Island for around 500,000 KRW.

Last night we arrived home from three days on the southern island of Jeju. We snagged this deal back at the end of August when we saw that tickets were about $75 per person R/T, taxes included. What's more is it only takes an hour by plane, and truth be told, we got to Jeju faster than it takes us to get to the other side of Seoul by subway!

Jeju Island is yet another much-talked about location among Koreans, one I wasn't sure would hold up to its nick-name "The Hawaii of Korea", but I have to admit, it is a uniquely beautiful place. I'm planning to post more details about the trip/hotel/transportation/what the island is like in December in my next entry, but for now some pictures for your viewing pleasure of Christmas on Jeju Island.
